Dog Breeding: Blog or Book?
Awhile back I started working on a book that outline 21 specific areas that we excelled at in our dog breeding process. You know, those things that really made a difference to people looking for a quality bred dog. Those things that our prospective owners said were important to them when we were discussing our breeding operations here at Dream About Farm (#DreamAboutFarm).
Finding a Well-bred and Cared for Dog
As we are now getting close to completing the writing and copy-editing parts, it dawned on us, that we should really Blog this information and get it into the hands of those people looking for help finding a well-bred and cared for dog. To be perfectly honest we did not come into this idea organically by ourselves. Garry realized the power and speed of this avenue with the help of our website guy, Rick Cooper at Social Media Outcomes. Garry had met Rick 10 years ago and has received some great guidance from Rick during that time.
So beginning this month we will be kicking off a spirited effort to post twice weekly on the Dream About Farm website blog. One post will be a chapter from the book, and a the other will be a handy hint, training topic, or just some Dog Gone nugget of useful information relating to dog ownership.
So here goes…
The Preface/Introduction to Our Book
One of the questions we typically ask new perspective owners who are calling us is “What is your sense of Urgency in getting a dog?” We are looking for an answer that says, typically, “I am not in a hurry to get the dog right now so much as I am looking to find the Right Dog.” Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner.
That’s what we want to hear, because it tells us that they are taking their time to do some research and to invest their time talking to breeders. For us, we know that we have some areas to cover with them that will show them that we have a quality process that produces the right kind of dog. The kind they are looking for.
Breeding and Training Dogs and Puppies
We don’t just have a quality process with the breeding and training of our dogs and puppies. We also have a quality process with our perspective owners AND our owners… after we have delivered their puppy to them. That quality approach is of utmost importance to us and to our clients as. It serves all of us, including the puppy/dog going into the future as well.
One thing I do know about, is that there are lots of imposters, charlatans and downright thieves wanting to take your money. They look for people who are wanting a dog right now and they play to that specific mentality. Over the past 25 years in this business, we have met plenty of people who have been taken advantage of. From downright theft, to getting a dog they didn’t want, to getting a dog who was very sickly.
Checklist to Rank Breeders
We wrote the book primarily to help people follow a process of identifying strengths and weaknesses in the breeders process and mannerisms, as well as slowing down their process. We present a checklist to assist them in ranking each breeder to what they spoke about and identified as key elements to their process of breeding and training puppies.
